  About Us
Helping Homeless Pets was created in November 2006 as a new service to help pets who need a new home.  We do this by directly supporting Pet Rescue Groups.

    Our Mission
Our mission is to support legitimate Pet Rescue Organizations by assisting them with certain services and allowing them to focus on the care and finding of a suitable home for the pets they have rescued.

Each pet listed on this site has been rescued by a rescue organization, given proper care and is available for adoption through that organization.

Why Rescue
Pet Rescue groups were born out of a need to save dogs and find them homes.  Years ago, shelters were the place most strays and unwanted dogs ended up.  When the shelters got full and a dog was there too long, the dog was put to sleep to make room for other more adoptable dogs coming in.  It was, and still is, a very sad situation when a healthy pet is put to sleep as a direct result of humans.  The staff working in shelters are still forced to make incredibly gut wrenching decisions everyday.  Mostly caused by pet over population and the failure of too many to recognize that pets should be spayed or neutered.  Bob Barker, the host of The Price is Right ended every broadcast of the show with a plea to spay or neuter your pets, starting in the 1970's.  But even today, there are those that just don't bother.

Rescue Groups began to form and one of the first was Pets Alive in New York State that was started in 1965.

Today, there are many No Kill shelters where pets are not put to sleep, but the problem of over crowding persists.  There are now breed specific rescue groups for nearly every breed and groups that rescue any dog.  There are also cat, rabbit, parrot, ferret and other groups that rescue other pets.

There are two major difference between shelters and rescues .  Shelters are usually run and funded by the city where they are located.  Rescue groups are funded only by donations and all the people are volunteers.  While some shelters do put animals into foster homes, many are housed onsite in kennels.  Rescue Groups place all their rescues into foster homes as they do not have shelter facilities.  Animals in foster care do fare better as they are in a real home, just like the home that is out there for them somewhere.

We have chosen to assist rescue groups, however, anytime a homeless pet finds a new and permanent home it's a good thing.  If there is a shelter near you, then visit there to find a pet, or just volunteer to walk a dog or clean a rabbit's cage.

We urge everyone to, 'Please consider adoption first'.  Adoption is not for everyone, but there are many wonderful pets, that will love you forever if you bring them home with you.

Phase 1 - Help Others Adopt A Pet
This new service will be introduced by posting pets for the rescue groups with revenue from advertising covering the cost of maintaining this site.  Visitors to the site will be able to join an update list where they will receive updates about a particular breed they may be interested in adopting.  They will also have the option of receiving other updates such as events, pet health updates and other pet related news.

Phase 2 - Next Steps
We have a number of new services and ideas we intend to launch to further support rescues and we will be announcing new ideas soon.  If you have ideas, we would love to hear them.  Just send them to us at feedback@helpinghomelesspets.com.

Our hope is that someday this service will no longer be required, but until that day, Helping Homeless Pets will help as many pets find forever, loving homes as we can.
