This amazing breed is unfortunately often misunderstood; their beauty, especially as young pups, often leads people to purchase them on impulse, without realizing that they are a very active, extremely intelligent dog that requires a high degree of patience and training in order to become a successful family member. As a result, many are surrendered to shelters or to rescue by unprepared and uncommitted owners.

Many shelters in Ontario keep a listing of breed specific rescue groups. They feel that in most cases, a dog has a better chance of success being re-homed by people who are familiar with the breed, to people who are specifically looking for that type of dog. That’s where we come in. When we get a call, from a shelter or private home, we go out to evaluate the eskie. If the temperament is found to be such that the eskie is a good candidate for re-homing, he/she comes into our program.

All of "our" eskies are fostered in-home, rather than in a kennel, so that we can get a good idea of the type of home that will suit him/her, and deal with any behavioural issues that might not have been immediately apparent. They get some basic "manners" training. If they are in poor health, they are nursed back. Each eskie is also brought up-to-date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered.

All of this is done on a completely non-profit basis. We operate solely through donations and adoption fees. We’ve had eskies come in with broken bones, mammary tumours, extremely bad teeth, an ulcerated eye and other immediate health concerns. Most come in without any health records and in need of spay/neutering. Sometimes juggling expenses while maintaining a reasonable adoption fee is tough, which is why donations such as yours are so vitally important to our continuing operation.
