Galloping
Greyhounds Adoption & Play Group
started out in early 2008 as
a play group for retired racing greyhounds in the Oshawa and surrounding
areas. We have now progressed to developing an adoption program. Our
play group provides a safe environment for greyhounds to run for fun and
socialize. We run our hounds in a horse barn in the winter, and in a
farmer’s field in summer. We also walk together at a local park one
night a week during the warm weather. This provides an opportunity for
greyhound owners to share experiences and learn from each other, which
enhances the level of care we can provide for these gentle, loyal, calm
companions, following their life of hardship on the tracks in the US.
Greyhounds are never off lead unless in a fenced area, as they have been
bred and trained to run – 45 mph couch potatoes. After retirement, they
prefer a soft pillow. Our adoption program is based on a foster home model to assist the greyhound in their transition to living with their adoptive family. Through fundraising (we are a volunteer group), we cover the cost of vetting including spay/neuter, blood work, deworming, tests for tic disease, vaccinations, dental care, as well as quality, nutritious food, while in foster care. Prospective adoptive families are well screened to ensure their emotional and financial commitment to the greyhounds for the duration of their lives. An integral part of our approach is information sharing and education about the life experience, and the care needs, of these sleek athletes, as well as to share the well kept secret about what wonderful pets these social, intelligent and sensitive animals are.
